Higher Risk Workplaces and Occupations

What workplace factors increase the risk of alcohol and other drug problems in the workplace?

You might have listed things such as:

  • Easily available alcohol or drugs
  • Low level or poor supervision
  • A work culture that tolerates or even encourages heavy/risky use
  • Poor working conditions
  • Stress

While there is limited evidence, there are grounds to conclude that workplace factors can increase or decrease risk, while what is happening in the broader community can also have impact. You can find some discussion of these kinds of influences at the VicHealth Creating Healthy Workplaces Program.
