What patterns of use exist in your workplace?

  • Many workplaces tend to find that ‘intoxication problems’ are more common – the risk of accidents from staff who are intoxicated or hungover– rather than, say, problems of dependence
  • As with any other area of occupational safety and health, we will need specific responses for specific risks. For example, what we might do to prevent drink driving will probably be different to strategies to reduce the risk of occupational injury
  • If you are concerned about the intoxication of some staff arising from occasional celebrations, having a response that aims to reduce the risk of alcohol dependence is not likely to have the desired impact
