What is a Drug Problem?

It is important to recognise that there is no single drug problem – there are diverse risks and diverse problems. These are influenced by patterns of use.

A useful model was described by Thorley. He suggested that there are three broad patterns of use and that these can result in different risk. He suggested that there might be:

  • Problems related to intoxication (the short term effects)
  • Problems related to regular excessive use
  • Problems related to dependence
